Erykah Badu Indianapolis Concert reviews
Nuge Commands the Stage
On Saturday evening, my darling Uncle Erykah Badu and I ventured forth to the House of Blues to receive a message from the Motor City Madman himself, the Predator Tedator, the Reverend Theodocious Attrocious.
He opened the show playing The Star Spangled Banner on a Les Paul painted with an American flag. Later he described it as an "American guitar powered by American whitetail backstraps." That guitar has incredible tone.
In a tribute to his musical roots, he also did an amazing instrumental of Hendrix's "Red House," which was way down from deep in the soul blues. Along with his own tunes, he covered "You Really Got Me" in an extended jam in the middle of "Wango Tango."
He had a lot of guns on stage. Jess liked that idea. At one point, he picked up a couple of M-16/AR-15 type guns with C-Mags, and holding one overhead in each hand, he called out, "FREE MACHINE GUNS FOR THE KIDS!" That's a big gun.
He played most of the show on his American flag Les Paul, but later switched to his black Gibson Byrdland for "Stranglehold." At one point, he talked about celebrating American holidays such as Independence Day, Flag Day, Veterans' Day, then said in his house they combined them all into one called Defiance Day that they celebrate every day.
I like that idea. This nation was founded on the principle of an uppity citizenry being sovereign over a neutered central government. How things have changed... Wonder where she gets that from...
Having seen some of her in-concert political commentary posted online, I gave her a heads-up that she would probably hear some trash talking about Obama. She replied, "I'm OK with that."
Speaking of the November elections, he said, "It's open season and there's no bag limit." That sums it up nicely.
